Love Starts Within: A Valentine’s Day Reflection on Self-Love and Mental Wellbeing

Feb 14, 2024

Valentine’s Day is often associated with expressions of love toward others, but what about directing some of that love inward?

This Valentine’s Day let’s embark on a journey of self-love and explore the profound impact it can have on our mental health and overall wellbeing.

But before that, what is self-love?

Self-love means loving yourself. It means that you have an appreciation, affinity, and positive regard for yourself. It’s closely related to self-esteem and self-compassion. When you have a strong sense of self-love, you understand your own value and treat yourself in a loving way. Unlike narcissism, loving yourself means knowing and accepting all of yourself – including your strengths and weaknesses.

Loving yourself is crucial in improving our wellbeing, especially our mental health. It also helps lower stress and allows us to set ourselves up for success. Most importantly, it allows us to take care of ourselves before we care for those around us.

Here are a few recommendations, from us at Guild, for you all to practice some well-deserved self-love this year:

Embracing Your Own Company

In a world that moves at a relentless pace, taking a moment to appreciate your own company is a powerful act of self-love. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea in silence, going for a leisurely walk, or simply taking a few deep breaths, these small moments of self-connection can have a big impact on your mental wellbeing.

Our Philanthropy Coordinator, Elizabeth Wagner, believes, “Sometimes, I like watching movies just by myself to give myself some time and space to enjoy my own company and feel relaxed.”

Acknowledging Your Worth

Self-love starts with acknowledging your worth and recognizing that you are deserving of love and care. Challenge the inner critic and replace self-doubt with affirmations that celebrate your strengths and uniqueness. Remember, you are a work in progress, and that’s something to be proud of.

Prioritizing Mental Health

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our mental health but this Valentine’s Day, make a commitment to prioritize your mental wellbeing. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, practicing mindfulness, or seeking professional support, taking steps to care for your mental health is an act of self-love that can have a lasting impact.

Nurturing Positive Relationships

While self-love is crucial, it’s also essential to foster positive relationships with those around you. Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Healthy connections contribute significantly to our mental and emotional wellbeing, creating a supportive network that adds to the love we give ourselves.

Our Marketing Manager Erica Taylor shares this great advice, “One of the things that I return to again and again is making sure that I am a friend to myself first. That sounds so simple saying out loud… but if you think about it- none of us are great at always doing it. When I talk to myself like a friend- with kindness, joy and celebrating the potential of where I can go; NOT beating myself up for what I have yet to do. It changes everything for myself and those around me.”

Finding Joy in the Little Things

Love doesn’t always have to be grand gestures; sometimes, it’s the little things that matter most. Take time to find joy in the simple pleasures of life – a good book, a warm hug, or a heartfelt laugh. Cultivating gratitude for these small moments enhances our overall sense of wellbeing.

Closing Thoughts

This Valentine’s Day let’s redirect some of that love and attention to ourselves. Embrace self-love as a daily practice, recognizing its profound impact on mental health and overall wellbeing. Remember, you are deserving of love – from others and, most importantly, from yourself.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Guild to you. ????
